NYC Greenmarkets

If you are in the city, please visit us at the famous Union Square Greenmarket on the corner 17th St. and Park Ave. South on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 8 to 6. We offer an extensive selection of the same plants and produce we carry at the garden center, delivered fresh from our own farm right into the heart of Manhattan. We’re proud to be one of organization’s original farmers, selling at Greenmarket since its second year in 1977!

Every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, Van Houten Farms has a booth at the famous Union Square Greenmarket, between 8 AM and 6 PM year round.

Over 250,000 customers a week purchase 1,000 varieties of fruits and vegetables at the market. The variety of produce available is broader by perhaps a factor of ten than what is found in a conventional supermarket.

In 1976, the Council on the Environment of New York City established the Greenmarket program, which provided regional small family farmers with opportunities to sell their fruits, vegetables and other farm products at open-air markets in the city. There were originally seven farmers at the first Greenmarket, and their selection sold out by noon. That summer, two more markets opened in New York City. What began with just a few farmers has grown exponentially over the past 33 years, transforming into the dynamic and vibrant public space it is today.

Located in one of New York City’s great public spaces, Union Square is a wonderful place for people watching too – catch local chefs from the city’s top restaurants shopping early in the morning for the freshest ingredients; take some time to chat with Jim from Van Houten Farms and learn about our growing practices; and don’t be surprised if you rub shoulders with the odd celebrity as you walk around!
