Van Houten Farms At Union Square, NYC

Every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, Van Houten Farms has a booth at the famous
Union Square Greenmarket, between 8 AM and 6 PM year round.

Over 250,000 customers a week purchase 1,000 varieties of fruits and vegetables at the market. The variety of produce available is broader by perhaps a factor of ten than what is found in a conventional supermarket.

In 1976, the Council on the Environment of New York City established the Greenmarket program, which provided regional small family farmers with opportunities to sell their fruits, vegetables and other farm products at open-air markets in the city. There were originally seven farmers at the first Greenmarket, and their selection sold out by noon. That summer, two more markets opened in New York City. What began with just a few farmers has grown exponentially over the past 33 years, transforming into the dynamic and vibrant public space it is today.

Located in one of New York City's great public spaces, Union Square is a wonderful place for people watching too - catch local chefs from the city's top restaurants shopping early in the morning for the freshest ingredients; take some time to chat with Jim from Van Houten Farms and learn about our growing practices; and don't be surprised if you rub shoulders with the odd celebrity as you walk around!

  • I was successful in ordering 50 40-pound bags of top soil and 15 HUGE bags of compost to be delivered at 7am on a Sunday (Mother's Day no less!) The last 2 years I've bought my annuals from their stand at the Union Square Farmers Market. Their price per bag of topsoil was 1/3 of the BEST cost that I found within NYC.. INCLUDING the DELIVERY CHARGE. Yeah Van Houten!

  • Great place for FRESH seasonal produce as well as an enormous selection of plants. The owners know Rockland and Rockland soil and will provide appropriate topsoil and fertilizer. Professional in every way.
